For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America.
Keith Olbermann has cited Glenn Beck as the "Worst Person
in the World" on more than one occasion. It's not hard
to document
the case for the designation.
Glenn Beck sort of look likes the stereotype of the guy mowing
his lawn next door, but he's really, like Michael Savage and
Ann Coulter, a descendant of the racist, xenophobic, and hateful
demagogues that have littered themselves throughout the underside
of America's history.
Beck most recently caused an outrage when he basically said
that the people, whose homes in California were being burned
down, deserved it: "I think there's a handful of people
who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are
losing their homes in a forest fire today."
The CNN producer of Beck's despicable program, Chris Balfe,
made the claim, "To most rational people, unfortunately
still means unfortunately." The implication is that Beck
was not actually wishing that the people who he biliously accuses
of being the "enemy within" should "burn, baby,
burn."
The Barnum & Bailey master of horrifying, divisive, and inciting
remarks later tried to backtrack a little. But, remember, with
these shock entertainers, the longer their shameless "controversial" remarks
become the focus of attention, the more publicity they get.
In the end, they believe such an uproar will enhance their
ratings -- and, most importantly, their paychecks.
It is shocking to a civil society that people who used to confine
their guttersnipe venom to the back of dusky barrooms are now
employed by the mainstream media.
BuzzFlash reader Terry Votichenko of Phoenix nominated Beck
for Media Putz of the Week, but also scolded CNN for hiring
him in the first place. We couldn't agree more.
This is not just about the coarsening of American society by
mainstreaming bigotry; it is about creating a mindset that
condones hateful actions, pitting American against American
in a new unCivil War.
It is inadequate to just declare Glenn Beck the Media Putz
of the Week. He is more than that; he is a menace to a civilized
democracy. He has a right to say whatever he wants, but CNN
sunk into the gutter when it gave him a television perch. The
management of CNN shares this week's BuzzFlash Media Putz honors.
They disgraced America when they signed Beck and thought they
could have a host who would out-demagogue FOX.
